Ephesians 4:26 tells us that “In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry…”

But let’s be honest about anger: most of us women are terrible at handling it. We’re taught from a young age that having emotions makes us fragile and expressing emotions makes us weak. So we learn to swallow our hurts and anger and smile through emotional pain. Except that all emotions are normal for women and men, including anger. When you force anger underground, it doesn’t just vanish. Anger settles, builds, and corrodes our hearts and minds on the inside.

Living with unresolved anger is exhausting. It’s the reason we have stress, snap, or feel irritable for seemingly no reason at all – like we’re walking around on a short fuse. Unresolved anger is a persistent physical tension—like a clenched jaw or knot in our bellies—that one can’t seem to shake. It’s an underlying cynicism that colors how some people view the world.

Here’s the reality: anger isn’t a design flaw in your personality. It’s a vital signal that something is wrong or someone has crossed a boundary. When we feel anger, it’s usually a coverup for a deeper more vulnerable emotional pain like rejection, humiliation, or shame. Anger is the coverup. So it’s never a problem that we have anger. The problems arise when we block or bury our emotional pain. Anger sticks around, like a secondary shield, because the original emotions and energy never got to run its course.
